When I say that a fighter is easier to play than a spellcaster, I mean that specifically in the sense that a rowboat is easier to move around in than a sailboat. Making random decisions as a spellcaster class - which is much easier to get stuck doing - has far swingier consequences. You can power attack for a totally random number every turn and the consequences for guessing wrong about what's mathematically correct to do are a small percent of your average DPR. Fighters (at least in my experience!) have very little play complexity, and most individual decisions are relatively inconsequential. Build complexity is almost a complete non-factor compared to play complexity when it comes to what's easiest for a new player.
